This study examined the effect of parental support on the mental health of middle adolescents with hearing impairment in the city of Douala, Cameroon. The study was guided by three specific objectives: to determine how parental educational involvement, emotional support, and behavioural monitoring influence adolescents’ mental health. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods research design was adopted, integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches. The study involved 20 middle adolescents with hearing impairment aged 14–16 years and 10 parents purposively selected from the Rehabilitation Centre of Deaf Children (CRES) in Douala. Data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to adolescents and semi-structured interviews conducted with parents. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis, while qualitative data were analysed thematically. The findings revealed that parental educational involvement (R = .226, p < .001), parental emotional support (R = .199, p = .002), and parental behavioural monitoring (R = .285, p < .001) each had a significant positive influence on the mental health of middle adolescents with hearing impairment. Multiple regression analysis further indicated that behavioural monitoring was the strongest unique predictor of adolescents’ mental health. Qualitative findings corroborated these results by demonstrating that parents promoted adolescents’ well-being through active academic support, emotional availability, open communication, consistent supervision, and moral guidance, although some experienced constraints related to work demands and limited time. The study concludes that comprehensive parental support is essential for promoting the psychological well-being and resilience of middle adolescents with hearing impairment. It recommends strengthening parent education programmes, home-school partnerships, and family-centred mental health interventions to enhance parental capacity to support adolescents with hearing impairment in Cameroon.
